iBooks Authoring in Schools

I just recently worked with a staff of teachers on Creating Classroom Content with iBooks Author.  Here is the digital handout that I created for the half day session:

Creating Classroom Content with iBooks Author digital handout

And here are some more specific examples of my positive experiences with iBooks Author in education:
I am pretty proud of our class-authored community history book written by 3rd graders:
And also a class project dual purposed as a service project with 8th graders:
I also enjoyed using iBooks Author with my students to facilitate Literature Circles in 8th grade Reading class:
And iBooks Author was one of the formats for publishing and sharing our school digital magazine written by students:
Also, a year-end "digital scrapbook" project in the form of an ABC book in my 7th grade English class:
But my biggest success with iBooks Author as a teacher has been letting go and encouraging my students to become authors themselves.  Whether for a science project, historical interview/biography, digital portfolio, poetry journal, nonfiction or fiction writing, when students are empowered by the high caliber tools available and the possibility of a global audience in the iBooks Store, they rise to the experience.
OR-- just search the iBooks Store for ONeill Public School
:-)
A challenge for us is distribution of books that are NOT published to the iBooks Store.  To work around this we found success by adding content to a course to which all students can enroll and then download any books they need.
This works very well for iPad, but being 1:1 school with MacBook Airs my ongoing plea is that books in an iTunes U course can be downloaded from a Mac (like video and pdf materials currently can).  iBooks on the Mac has tremendous value in education, too, and not every book is suited for public publishing in the iBooks Store.  Other than that, we LOVE that students and teachers have another rich option for producing and sharing media-rich educational content. iBooks Author rocks!

Writing Interactive Fiction: "Choose Your Own Adventure"

If you are looking for a great end-of-year creative writing project, then you should definitely enroll in my newest iTunes U course entitled Choose Your Own Adventure: Writing Interactive Fiction.  This simple project idea is grounded in writing instruction best practices and enriched with many technology options. Since it is an iTunes U course, you would need to view on iPad or iPhone for optimal viewing experience. However, once you have explored the resources you could definitely adapt the project to any device for students. Enjoy the many adventures you and your students can experience together in this fiction-writing classroom experience.

NPR article on blogging from small town America schools

A reporter from NPR recently contacted me and interviewed me about my use of blogging as an educator.  This morning I received an email from someone who had read the article which prompted me to search for it myself.  The commonalities between all the teachers interviewed is evident.  Blogging, and technology in general, truly is the great connector; the great equalizer.  I am thankful daily for the opportunities it presents to my students and myself professionally.

Newly Published Student Authors at OHS!

Several OHS 7th Grade students have recently joined the ranks of published authors as they successfully authored, submitted, and were accepted for publishing on Apple's iBooks Store.

Their original books, authored in 7th grade English class, were the result of a nonfiction writing project entitled "My B-side".  Students chose a personal passion, hobby, or talent-- something that was the "flip-side" to their well-known personality-- and wrote about it. The objective was informative/technical writing, and by choosing a topic that students personally knew so well, they could focus on communicating this real life skill/talent/or interest through their first-person writing, rather than external research.

Students worked through the writing process to compose their drafts and utilized digital tools such as Google Docs, Pages, and iPad apps throughout the process. Each was also encouraged to create original media to accompany the writing. Many students created videos, animations, illustrations, photography, and widgets to bring their writing to life once assembled in iBooks Author.

Out of all the 7th grade authors over a dozen were selected to submit for publishing on Apple's iBooks Store.  Students could choose whether to submit via Mrs. Morrow's Books account under their own name as author or if they wanted to go through the process of creating their own Books account for the iTunes Store.

While we are still waiting on approval on several books, the following titles have already successfully been approved and are live on iTunes!

In addition, two science-related books have been published from work from Mr. Morrow's and Mrs. Knabe's classes:
Congratulations to each and every OHS 7th grade English student... you ARE AUTHORS!
